Straits of Tiran

The Gulf of Aquaba is like a big groove at the bottom of the ocean. This canyon drops down to many thousand meters.

At the beginning of the gulf the Straits of Tiran is situated. At the peaks of four gigantic underwater mountains four coral reefs had been formed. They are the Reefs of Tiran. They got the names of British cartographers which lived in the 19th century: Gordon, Thomas und Jackson.

The strong currents which can be found here, draw big schools of snappers, tuna, baracudas and mackarels.

They attrack sharks: grey reef sharks, oceanic white-tip sharks, hammerhead sharks, zebra sharks and even tiger sharks had been seen here.

Of course nourishment is drifting as well with the current to the reefs and, as result of this, one can find gorgeously blossoming hard and soft corals as well as gorgonias.

Those who dive the first time here, experience a colorful overstimulation of their eyes - the natures splendid play of colors.

Jackson Reef is the most northern of the four reefs of Tiran, which are known to be one of the best dive sites of the Red Sea. A paradise for all divers with superb photographic motives: black corals, a colorful diversity of soft corals and reef fishes, many sharks and big turtles. The steep outer side makes it possible to do very good wall dives.

The Thomas Reef is inbetween the Gordon and the Woodhouse Reef. One find magnificant drop-offs here – it’s world class wall diving.

The deeply seceding walls are completely covered with beautiful soft corals. Between the big gorgonias a  multifaceted number of Red Sea fish is bustling about.

The schools (like in the picture) are often standing wall-like in the impervious deep blue of the ocean.

Gordon Reef - This Tiran-Reef is a highlight for every diver. At this spacious reef one dips down til a depth of 25 meters into a lively unterwater life, among other things with sharks, big tuna and eagle rays.
