Before you begin your journey we would like to give you some useful tips and information to help you to come with the right attitude for a trip in Egypt. Please read them carefully and bear them in mind! First of all a frank word: A trip to Egypt is not like any other trip. Egypt is an oriental country with a lot of problems and can only barely cope with them. Do not expect a smooth running organisation like you are used to in Europe. Start your trip unbiased and with the wish to get to know the country and its people. Be surprised by the amazing art treasures and the different way of life you will meet. Egypt is not a country for those to whom punctuality and precision are of overriding importance. Here different standards rule. This is the reason that we cannot guarantee a trip that will be perfectly smooth running until the smallest detail. Important addresses: Please make sure that you are familiar with the contact details of the Embassy of the Arabic Republic of Egypt, the Egyptian Tourist Information Office or the Consulate in your home country, as well as your Embassy in Egypt in case you need to contact them once in Egypt. Luggage: Each person is allowed to carry 20 kg of luggage. This does not apply to small children up to two years who do not have their own seat. You can find the number of kilos you are allowed to carry on your ticket. Some airlines sometimes allow divers to carry an extra 30 kg for diving equipment, but this is not a proven rule. Check in: Please check in at the check-in counter of your airline no later than 90 minutes before departure time. Loss or damage of luggage: In case your luggage is lost or damaged, please report to the information desk of your airline and ask for an international certificate. Without such a certificate it is not possible to claim your airline or insurance company (in case you have included this in your travel insurance). Your travel to Egypt: You will need a passport that is still valid six months after the date that you will depart Egypt. You also need a visa. You can buy a visa for your stay in Egypt at the Egyptian airport, which is valid for maximum 30 days. The costs of such a visa are approximately 20 euros. Sometimes the purchase of the required visa is included in the package deal. To get a visa you do not need a application form or passport photo. Important: In case you have a direct flight to Sharm el Sheikh, please make sure that you buy the ‘big’ visa. A ‘small’ visa will not allow you to visit Ras muhamed, Tiran or the Catharina monestary or to travel to Cairo or to make a circular tour. To buy the ‘big’ visa make sure you have 20 euros ready in paper money. If you make use of a proof of identity for a child, please make sure this contains a passport photo, also in case your child is not 10 years of age yet. Minors who are travelling alone will need a valid passport and an authenticated statement of approval by the parents or guardians. Those who travel in Egypt without any guidance are obliged to report within 7 days upon arrival at the aliens police or the local police station and be able to show a valid passport for registration purposes. Observing these rules, as well as the rules concerning customs is each guest’s own responsibility and is liable for the consequences and costs in case of violation. Vaccinations: At this moment there are no vaccinations compulsory. One exception is Yellow Fever when travelling from infection areas. When staying longer than one month foreigners must be able to show the negative results from a HIV test. Currency/ Exchange: When arriving in or leaving Egypt you are allowed to carry an amount of 20 egyptian pounds. Upon arrival in Egypt you need to declare this money. You need to keep the declaration form with you until the moment you leave the country and must be able to show it if asked by an inspector. Arrival/ Transfer/ Travel guide: In case you have booked a transfer to Dahab with DIVEIN, one of our staff members will welcome you at the exit gate of the airport, after the passport control. If so desired we are happy to assist you with any of the formalities upon arrival. After this your travel to Dahab will continue by means of a taxi minibus. This transfer to Dahab can be booked individually with us at DIVEIN in advance. |

To make sure that your return flight is secured and that you are informed about possible last minute changes in flight times, you need to confirm your return flight 72 hours before departure. DIVEIN or Hotel Sarah Village is happy to do this for you. Please note however, that it is your own responsibility to make sure that this confirmation is carried out. Voltage: The voltage in Egypt is 220 with regular power failures. Sometimes adapters are necessary. It is recommended to bring one of your own. Water: The tap water can be used for washing and brushing your teeth, however the water should not be drunk. When you buy a bottle of water make sure that the bottle has not been opened before or is opened for the first time in your presence. Please take into account that there is always a possibility of a water failure (also for a couple of days). In the desert regions the water often has to be transported for several 100 miles by truck. This can cause a malfunction in the water supply, especially in the hot summer months. Language: The national language is Arabic. English and French is is often spoken too. Time: Central European Time plus one hour. Public holidays: The weekly rest day is Friday. National holidays are 25 April, 1 May, 1 June, 23 July, 6 and 24 October, 23 December and the national islamic holidays which differ each year, the last day of the Ramadan and three days Bairaim. Ramadan: The Ramadan is the time of year that the Muslims fast. This period lasts for four weeks and is usually strictly observed. This means for the Muslims that they cannot eat, drink or smoke between sunrise and sunset. Please expect longer waiting times in restaurants and bars during Ramadan and that there will be less alcoholic drinks available. Please try not to eat, drink or smoke in public during this time of year. Climate: Egypt has a subtropical desert climate and the air is very dry. The difference between day and night temperature can be as much as 15 degrees Celsius. Clothing: If you have booked a tour or Nile cruise we advise you to take light, comfortable clothes. If you are coming during the winter months, please also bring a warm sweater or jacket for the evenings. Divers should bear in mind that even when the water is 24 degrees Celsius, you can get really cold during your second dive. Therefor always bring a Neopren diving suit. Please refrain from wearing flasy clothes, also in your hotel. If you do not want to cause a stir, you should avoid wearing shorts, low-cut or see-through dresses, as well as very short shirts. Do not forget sun lotion, sunglasses and a hat. Valuables: These you can leave in the hotel safe. Please do consider if you really need to bring any valuables on your trip. Excursions: Please ask for our non-diving programme. All excursions can be booked on the spot as long as the minimum amount of entries is met. Look for more information on the bulletin board at the diving school. Eating and drinking: In all hotels it is possible to order international dishes, besides the Arabic cuisine. The egyptian cuisine is usually very greasy, very sweet and highly seasoned. Egyptian wine and the local beer Stella are nice to drink. On very hot days you must avoid drinking ice cooled drinks, because you are sure to regret this later on the day. We also advice you not to buy any fruit on the way that cannot be peeled. Tips: Please be warned; giving and receiving tips is often misunderstood. Do not give more than you would give in your homecountry, giving a tip should always be a personal reward. |
