Cairo - the main city of Egypt - the Arabians proudly call it "the mother of all cities". 17 millions of people live in Egypt´s metropolis, where traditions meet the modern life as hardly nowhere else. The animated main city with the amazing variety connects Africa, the Orient and Western Europe. The egyptian museum owns the biggest and one of the most important collection of pharaonic and byzantine art. |

Basic commodity from five milleniums are shown here. World famous is the treasure of the grave from Tutanch- amun. In the city´s heart is the Tahrir place. (place of revolution) Multistory houses, which are built in french style, are typical for this neighborhood. From the Cairo Tower you can have a ingenious view on the city. The tower, which has a hight of 187 m, stands in a exclusive residential area. Also very interesting is the hustle and bustle on the Khan El Khalili bazar. |

Cairo has more than 1000 mosques. One of the most beautiful ones is the Al Azhar-mosque (10. century.), which encloses also a madrasa. An excursion through the Old Town is a fascinating journey in the past. Worth visiting is also the coptic museum and the museum of islamic art. Opening hours: In summer : 8.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. In winter: 9.00 a.m. to 4 p.m. |

At the times of the Pharaonics, the east bank of the Nile were for the alive people and the west bank for the dead people. Today the west bank is the modern part of Egypt´s main city with a university, the suburb Zamalek and the apartment building of Dokki. However on the outskirts begin the Egypt of the Fellachen (rural population) with date palms, canals, small villages and rank green fields. |
