The Catharine´s cloister is certainly one of the most famous sights of the Sinai. This cloister at the bottom of the mountain Moses is with its age of 1400 years, one of the oldest cloister of the world.

The drive is one of the most beautiful distances of the Sinai. At the end of a straight, you have a view on the basin. Moses has made a stop there with his israelis near the mountains "Moses" and "Catherine" in a hight of 1.570 m. From the out view, the cloister with 15m high granitic walls, looks like a fort. The story of the monks in the mountains is caused by the distribution of the Christendom, which were brouhgt to Egypt by the holy Marcus. Only a small part of the cloister is openend for the tourists. And for all wanderers: This trip can be very good combined with a climb on the Moses or Catherine mountain. But then our day trip must start in the early morning, before sunrise. |
